The Early Years

Nathan became a musical force at a young age- by 18 years old he was decorated with awards and acknowledgements for solo and ensemble work in jazz saxophone, including from Downbeat Magazine, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington Festival, a feature in the Pittsfield Jazz Festival’s Prodigy series, and placement in the 2016 and 2017 Grammy Camp jazz session bands. It was at this time that his passion for the continuum of soul and blues music was ignited.

Upon moving to Manhattan, he became an artist with Sofar Sounds, a solo and sideman performer on vocals and saxophone, and a vital soloist and arranger for his alma mater’s a cappella group, Columbia University’s Notes and Keys. He quickly grew comfortable leading shows at popular NYC music venues, starting and developing bands, and building a robust community of peers and mentors.

In 2021, Nathan received his B.A. in sustainable development from Columbia University. He entered college with the intention of studying chemistry on the pre-med track— despite completing all his premed requirements, music and performing called out to him a bit louder than med school. He was a lead soloist and arranger for the school’s oldest and finest a cappella group Notes and Keys, participated in jazz ensembles, pit orchestras, and producing concerts in DIY spaces on campus.

He is passionate about the many ways that music and art can contribute to conversations about sustainability and social justice. He has planned benefit concerts, managed grant programs and fundraisers, and developed a research focus within his major at the intersection of art and urban sustainability. In 2019 he was selected as a member of the Americans For The Arts, Diversity In Arts Leadership program. He has several years of experience in arts non-profit administration.

While attending Montclair High School, he directed the student run a cappella group The Passing Notes, became an adept woodwind doubler, and performed as a singer, actor, and pit musician in theater productions in the School of Visual and Performing Arts. He led and participated in a number of concert bands, choirs, rock and r&b groups, all propelling his artistry and refining his ear for excellence early on his music career.
